Yes, I am alive!

I am sorry to have been absent for so long... my trip to Japan was FABULOUS!!!

Unfortunately I had to have a little operation upon return which has really knocked me around!

But I'm back and I have been feeling a lot of clothcake love!

This installation is called "The Northern Lights"

The stately buildings along North Terrace are lit each with a series of digital images to amazing effect!

Well, I'm a little sad...
The Adelaide Fringe, the Adelaide Festival and WOMADelaide have come and gone for another year {these festivals are my excuse for my lack of posts recently} What a busy March it has been!

Brett and I spent the last day of the Fringe at Amococo {well not the whole day but 2 hours waiting in line and 20 minutes inside.} What is Amococo? Read more here but essentially it's a giant balloon made from coloured and reflective "tent" material which is lit naturally completely by the sun that you can walk through / sit in / be amazed by...

It was AMAZING and definitely worth the time spent waiting in line with some not-so-patient people!

What else did we get up to during the festivals? And I lived it this weekend!

Friday night was 10 years since B and I had our first date, so we celebrated with a gorgeous dinner at Chianti {yum} followed by Tripod and the Dragon {hilarious} followed by Drinks at The Treasury and The Hilton {also yum}

Saturday was spent dancing, listening, sinking, drinking, talking and eating at WOMADelaide {fantastic}

Sunday was spent celebrating my Nanna's 83rd birthday and enjoying the gorgeous rain and today is a public holiday! I can't imagine a better weekend!

Hope you had a lovely one too!!

Wow... I haven't posted since Monday! I'm sorry about that but my excuse is that the Adelaide Fringe {it's the second biggest in the world after the one in Edinburgh} is on so I've been busy out and about... going to the Garden... watching the parade...

Yesterday, I went to see the latest acquisition at the Adelaide Art Gallery. She's called Big Mother and word is that she cost over $200,000! Yesterday I went to hear the artist, Particia Piccinini talk about her sculpture and a collection of her other works.

"The extraordinary Big Mother, measures 1.75m and is made from silicone, fibreglass, leather and human hair. Piccinini was inspired to create the work after reading a story about a female baboon whose baby died while still nursing. The primate mother, overwhelmed by grief, abducted a human child as a substitute (the child was later recovered unharmed)."

Two of my other favourites...

Patricia stated that Foundling was inspired by a woman she met in America who had adopted two Chinese girls from an orphanage specifically for little girls with clef palettes {they are unable to work, to marry, to have a normal life in China so they are quite often just left to fend for themselves.} Foundling is not what you'd expect a baby to look like, she {yes I was surprised she was a she, she looks like a he to me} she is too big for her capsule but she is still adorable, the empathy in her eyes makes you want to pick her up.

The Long Awaited explores themes of love and trust. The little boy is completely at ease with the "Grandmother type" figure {once again, she is a she not a he.} The grandmother form is based loosely on that of a dugong, very trusting marine mammals who carry their newborns on their backs for up to 2 years until they can fend for themselves.

Patricia, an artist trained in painting and drawing, says that she uses age in her work to give the work integrity; her subjects are wise. Many of her ideas stem from when nature and technology collide {genetic modification, technology taking over and giving birth to itself, what is natural, what is perceived as natural}

Hi There!

I hope that you had a seriously wonderful Christmas. I certainly did... hence the lack of posts...

the 10th Christmas together for B and I!

Tonight is New Years' Eve... ALREADY! Where has the year gone?

We'd hoped to spend tonight somewhere cold and in the Northern Hemisphere but instead we'll be here signing off the past decade and bringing in 2010 41 degree Celsius heat! We're off the the Adelaide Convention Centre Ball and this will be our 5th. It's so much fun! It's black tie or dress to theme and tonight's theme is the Flamingo Club. B and I are going as Mr and Mrs 1930s... I can't wait to "frock up" with feathers, lace and beads... poor B will be in a 3 piece suit, hat and gloves... not really dressing for the weather but well the theme is more important!

To other matters...

I don't really make New Years Resolutions...

but we have big plans for 2010;

1. Renovate the House

2. Go to Japan during Blossom Season {hopefully} and then spend time in Italy, Portugal and Spain {I like to say on the way home... clearly it's not haha}

3. Get a PUPPY! Not sure what type, something medium sized and with a poodle mix so that SHE doesn't shed.

4. Keep Searching for Sporadic Surprises

Anyway, it's been really nice getting to know you out there in the blogosphere these past few months. I really hope that you have a fabulous evening tonight and that 2010 is a healthy, happy, prosperous and fun year for you all!

Four Sisters

Zuster is the Australian company of 4 sisters {zuster is dutch for sister by the way}

Generally, they specialise in beautifully crafted timber furniture

{I particularly love the stella tables}

But...

I didn't know {until I received their newsletter today} that they also stock Christmas accessories!

Wonderful Wall

The grey wall behind the timber, the black accents, the grey floorboards...

I think this light would fit right in!

With it's walnut bent arm, red electrical cord detail and cast concrete shade and base

I think it's quite fantastic actually!

Cardboard Couture

Lulamae's amazing temporary shop in Melbourne Central

"The entire fit out of the store is constructed from 100% post-consumer waste recycled cardboard, which despite how humble it may sound, has been transformed into a boutique fit out fit for a king.

The pre-cut panels turned up flat packed, folded and were slotted into place on the spot for the stay.
Drawn-on classical columns provide an elegant neoclassical streetscape to the exterior design of the casual commercial space.

Cardboard tubes held in place by beautifully cut brackets provide the much-needed rails for showcasing the Lulamae clothing range on their hangers, whilst a cardboard cabinet with doodled detailing displays folded items.

When Lulamae’s time comes to ‘pop-down’, the streetscape will be folded up neatly, packed away to provide a regal re-incarnation elsewhere."
